Alder Creek Kayak & Canoe is the premiere kayak, canoe & stand up paddle store and paddling school in Oregon.
We take pride in offering the best paddlesports instruction available. Whether you are a rank beginner or an up and coming paddler, Alder Creek’s kayak, canoe, and sup school can help develop the skills you need to enjoy your time on the water.
This is a good example of a company that just rocks! The website itself was older, but they were keeping the content up to date. This site just needed a good facelift.
aldercreek.com came to us with a website that was already doing a lot. It was just starting to show its age. Like items not formatting well on mobile. There was a booking piece that didn’t format on the desktop “all the way”. It was functional enough that visitors could still get to the booking.
We were able to sit down and meet with the aldercreek staff and you instantly felt like you were surrounded by these world-class water sport pros. They had a ton of amazing pictures and amazing products. We just needed a way to show them off better.
The old website was still in that center frame style (which was typical for web design in its day). The site felt too contained. We wanted to break the site out and really build it to sit full width in a lot of areas.
Sites like this have a lot of moving parts
The non web designer might not know how much the old site was doing behind the scenes. This site was listing classes and bookings, featuring new and upcoming events, and had a fairly robust shopping cart.
The challenge is that we needed to integrate all the functionality into the new website design and we were going to add even more functionality on top of this. We wanted to throw a full width slider in, an animated product slider, and even an instagram feed.
Not to mention, we were abandoning the old shopping cart software and building a brand new shopping cart using Woocommerce. Now we have the ability to sync up payment processing, shipping, and inventory in new ways.
Better Classes integration
We worked with the booking company to format the classes into our new design and update to the latest version of their platform. Inner left hand navigation was then styled in a way to make it a little more user friendly.
The way we search the site changed so we could have better integration with these classes.
We had to write in a custom search function to be able to call the various classes they offer. The website then displays out a nice details page.
There is an e-commerce piece as well.
We moved the products onto Woocommerce (this powers 37% of all e-commerce sites *stats of the woo 2016). The products themselves now have a zoom feature. They are sorted better, and we added menu navigation to help users drill down to product categories.
