Five Ways to Keep Your Website Mobile-Friendly

According to Statista, mobile devices accounted for 51.2 percent of web page views around the world in April, 2018. While that figure is impressive, it’s even more remarkable when you consider that Statista didn’t include web page views on tablets when it calculated the number. As of January, 2018, Statista estimated that the world’s mobile population included 3.7 billion people.

If those figures aren’t enough to convince you that your website needs to be mobile-friendly, consider this – Google just shifted to a mobile-first index last month. That means the search engine will prioritize websites that are optimized for mobile in the search engine results pages it produces. If your website isn’t mobile-friendly, it may drastically impact where your site lands in SERPs.

Ensuring Your Web Design Is Mobile-Friendly

If you don’t have a website for your business yet, you should ensure your web design is mobile-friendly from the start. If you do have a website, you should carefully review your entire website to make sure it’s optimized for a mobile-first world.

Even if you’re confident that your website is mobile-friendly, there are a few things you should do to ensure it stays that way. Here are a few of the things you should do:

Improve Your Site’s Speed

If your web pages don’t load in two or three seconds, it will affect the user experience your website provides, which can negatively impact where your site ends up in SERPs. Even worse, a slow load speed can drive customers to your competitors’ websites. To ensure your pages load quickly, remove as many plug-ins as possible and compress any high-resolution images that are on your site.

Make Your Text Easier to Read

When you’re incorporating SEO into your content, it’s vital for you to remember to keep your text easy to read. To begin, you should format your content so that mobile users don’t have to zoom or swipe side to side to read your material. Here are a few other things you can do to make your content easier for viewers to consume:

    • Use bullet points and subheaders, being sure to use keywords in each
    • Compose paragraphs that have no more than five lines (not sentences!) of text
    • Leave plenty of whitespace on each of your webpages
    • Use a larger font size
    • Use a light background for dark text

Make Sure Your Business Is Accessible

With so many people using smartphones to search the Internet, it’s only natural that some of them may want to call your business. Be sure your contact information is readily accessible on your webpages. Better yet, put a click to call button on your pages. With 88 percent of users contacting or visiting a local business with 24 hours of searching for it, you should include a Google Maps icon on your pages, too.

Use Simpler Forms

If you have forms on your website, make sure they’re simple to fill out. Determine the minimum amount of information you want to collect at each touchpoint and make sure your forms only solicit that information.

Incorporate Tabbed Content

No matter what platform you use for your web design, you should incorporate tabbed content into your site. Tabbed content will keep your website mobile-friendly because it allows users to open different documents or view text and video simultaneously without forcing them to close or move between different windows.
